welcome to me
BLOG TOPIC: Behind the business...
My entire craft is built around the people I meet, their special day and their everlasting memories yet, for those of you who want to know a little bit more about me and my story, here it is!
Born and raised on the South Coast of Dorset I can comfortably say creativity is in the blood. I’m a daughter of a Graphic Designer and Florist (more on this later!) and both my brother CJ and I have followed in our parents’ footsteps.
I am the youngest of 5 siblings with 3 nephews, 2 stepbrothers and a stepsister so suffice to say Christmas, birthdays and weddings are always a busy affair! I love the hustle and bustle of family life, the petty arguments and the chaos at the dinner table with everyone talking over each other. Family for me is everything and we’re all very close.
I met my husband Steve during my short time at Brockenhurst College making us childhood sweethearts. It sounds cliché but it truly was love at first sight and we have been inseparable for nearly 13 years, 2.5 of those years we have been blissfully married. He is my best friend, my partner and my in-house comedian and during my spare time I love nothing more than walks in the New Forest, cuddling up on the sofa and watch TV with him.
As well as a full family tree I also have an elusive cat called Socks who spends most her time under our bed, in the downstairs cupboard or in my office… she isn’t best pleased with our newest addition - a gorgeous Red Fox Labrador called Chester, he has truly stolen our hearts.
There’s a famous saying “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” And I guess you could say in my case that could be true. I was never one to flourish in academic subjects at school yet put a pen in my hand and give me a sketchbook and I 100% made up for it! I knew of my passion for design from an early age so quite frankly school was a chore I quickly moved on from when I was 16.
I tried college, a BTEC National Diploma in art & photography actually, but I knew deep down I just needed to get started and learn more about what I truly wanted to do – floristry! I did the necessary course at Bournemouth & Poole College although working with mum meant I quickly picked up the skills and excelled on my course.
My mum Jules is a renowned Florist in the local area and has built her name over 30 years of hard work, innovation and attention to detail. If you’re from Mudeford you’ll know her shop very well and this is where I honed my skills as a Florist from the age of 16. She’s taught me everything I know and whilst at times having your mum as a boss can be challenging, it was a valuable experience in my life and I appreciate everything she’s done for me as a mother and mentor.
J H FLORAL DESIGN
It was around 2014 when I started to think about my future and branching out on my own. Having worked in the industry 8 years by this point, and spending much of my spare time creating look books, sketching designs and looking at trends I knew it was time to move forward.
Planning my wedding was a genuinely helpful insight for me as to what else was around, how people plan their big days, budget control and putting their visions into reality. I made connections with some truly amazing suppliers who I have continued to collaborate with and recommend ever since and I learnt a lot about my work and the direction I wanted to go.
Come 2018 I took the plunge. JH Floral Design was created and I have never looked back.
There are two perspectives to a wedding; the couple’s vision and their guests’ vision. I believe I can create exactly what you want with enough ‘wow’ factor to set the scene for your special day. I have so many ideas I can’t wait to explore and really look forward to meeting with more amazing couples as I set sail on this journey.
So here’s to my first blog! Thank you for reading
